Trinidad Moruga Scorpion Pepper

At first bite of the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion chili pepper, you might think you were tricked because it doesn’t’ seem hot at all. But wait just a minute and the heat will start to build up considerably. It will continue to get hotter and hotter until you are miserable with the heat. But other than the extreme heat, the Trinidad has a sweet, fruity flavor. Its flavor has the perfect combination of the sweet and hot flavors that many enjoy.

History of the Trinidad Moruga

This chili pepper is a native of Tobago and Trinidad and from the Moruga district. At one time, in 2012, it was named the hottest pepper in the world according to New Mexico State University’s Chili Pepper Institute. At that time, it was given a rank of 1.2 million heat units on Scoville’s heat scale. There were a few who ranked it over 2 million SHUs but it never was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Cultivation of the Trinidad Moruga Pepper Plant

The Trinidad Moruga can grow in almost any climate and anywhere in the world. However, it will not thrive in regions such as in North America which has changing seasons. The pepper plant is not able to survive colder temps and will die if the temperatures are below freezing. But as long as it does not freeze, the perennial will continue to grow year-round. The plant’s growing cycle will slow down considerably in colder months. In cooler climates, the plant can be seeded after the last frost in the spring until fall’s first frost.
